Welcome to the website of Wells Shotokan Karate Group
We have been running in the beautiful City of Wells, Somerset since the 1970′s making us one of the oldest Martial Arts groups in the West of England.
We are a traditional group and as such we place great emphasis on correct technique and etiquette. We also believe very strongly in the maxim that ‘Karate is for everybody’ young, old, strong or weak as stated by its founder Gichin Funakoshi (pictured left).
A great emphasis is also placed on the realistic interpretation (Bunkai) of the forms (Kata) of Karate against realistic attacks. This makes it a great self defence system rather than a Sport.
Alongside the classes, regular courses are taught by the chief instructor Sensei Paul Mitchell 4th Dan on the subject of Kata and their Bunkai and are open to all practitioners of Karate.
Paul and Christine Mitchell took over running the Group in the mid 1990′s when it was affiliated to the KUGB. In recent years the group changed affiliation to The Traditional Shotokan Karate Association (TSKA)
We are not a political group and pride ourselves on making all welcome that wish to train with us regardless of experience, affiliation or style.
Beginners are always sure of a warm welcome.
Wells members check out the ‘News’ tab regularly – we will post updates here.
